Fling Table®
A universal articulator platform for verifying restoration construction to the desired aesthetic and functional plane.
This is the Universal Articulator Platform discussed in many of Dr. Fling’s lectures. Review the article Transferring the Appropriate Construction Plane with the use an Facebow/Articulator Correction Platform for detail on use. It is simple, easy to work with, and best of all can be utilized with almost any articulator. By using this platform, restoration construction is completed to the correct aesthetic plane and with the proper arch of closure.
Follow these five easy steps to ensure your restorations are constructed to the correct aesthetic plane:
- After prepatation, take a "stick bite" registration paralleling this to the patient's desired aesthetic plane. This is the "construction plane" bite registration.
- Take a facebow registration, and then mount casts on articulator.
- Place "construction plane" bite registration on articulated cast.
- Place articulator on the Fling Table®, and adjust feet of the table so that the "construction plane" bite stick is parallel to lab bench top.
- Construct restorations with incisal edges referenced to parallel the bench top, with interproximal embraces 90 degrees to the aesthetic reference. *
*This table is intended to be used as a periodic reference during restoration construction. It ensures that fabrication of incisal edges are parallel to the desired aesthetic plane, and that interproximal embrasures will not be canted clinically, without changing the distance from hinge axis to occlusal contacts.

Practice Position Papers
As Dr. Fling was going through the process of completing the task necessary to become a “Pankey Scholar”, he wrote a series of papers to his staff, laboratory technician and to each specialist that he worked closely with. These documents express what is expected from each of these mentioned groups when working with his patients. As an example, the document to his orthodontist describes...
- What correspondence will be included upon referral
- Which radiograghs will be included upon referral
- Expectations of aesthetic outcomes
- Expectations of occlusal outcomes
- TMJ considerations before/during/after treatment
- How recall will be conducted while in braces
- Post treatment care
- Options of retention and/or splint usage
This document also explains what Dr. Fling’s responsibilities are in return. It is the combined commitment of all of these parties that create an agreed purpose to care. It is this agreement to care that provides a stimulus for the betterment of each patient. While your “Position” may be different than Dr. Fling’s, reviewing these commitments may be beneficial to developing your standards. These agreed “Positions’ for standard of care then hold each party accountable.
These Position Papers are delivered in CD form. They include papers written to:
- Staff
- Laboratory Technician
- Orthodontist
- Periodontist
- Endodontis
- Pedodontists
