Endodontics
Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that specifically focuses on etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the tooth pulp, root and periapical tissues.
Tooth pulp is at the center of each tooth. It is a collection of blood vessels and nerves that help to build the tooth and surrounding tissues. The pulp can become infected and diseased which can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, fractures, or repeated dental procedures. When the damage to the tooth goes beyond the outer portion of the tooth or the enamel to the inside of the tooth or tooth pulp, a special treatment may be required. If the inside of the tooth is infected or it is inflamed and you experience sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums, you may need a root canal procedure or an endodontic treatment.
Endodontic treatment or root canal therapy is a method through which the dead tooth pulp is removed in an effort to save the tooth from falling out or requiring extraction at a later time. Endodontic treatment usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.
Through endodontic procedures an endodontist can extend the life of or heal hurt or decaying teeth, thus giving you a healthier mouth. Always consult your dentist to determine whether or not you need the specific endodontic treatment.
